Turkington surges to victory in BTCC race one at Oulton Park

Sunday, June 30 2019

Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship leader Colin Turkington surged to victory in the opening race of the day at Oulton Park behind the wheel of his Team BMW 330i M Sport this afternoon (Sunday).

Turkington led the race from lights to flag, after utilising his BMW's rear-wheel-drive grunt to maintain his pole position advantage into Old Hall from the start, head of works Honda racer Dan Cammish and fellow BMW racer Andrew Jordan.

Behind the leading trio, it was the Cobra AmD Honda Civics of Sam Tordoff and Rory Butcher that followed, with Butcher pulling ahead of his team-mate with a clinical move at the Island hairpin during the opening exchanges.

Despite carrying maximum championship success ballast for his position atop the standings, Turkington made the most of his soft Dunlop tyres in the opening couple of laps before Cammish began to try and reel him back in.

The race was interrupted on lap five when Matt Neal speared off the circuit from sixth position at Druids, and the safety car was deployed. As a result, the race distance was increased from 15 to 18 laps, with action resuming on lap 11.

Upon the resumption, Turkington continued to command from the front with Cammish unable to do anything about his rival, with Jordan running home to a comfortable third. It was all action behind though, with Jason Plato (Vauxhall Astra), Ashley Sutton (Subaru Levorg), and Tom Ingram (Toyota Corolla) coming together at Hislops chicane.

Sutton dropped back to tenth behind Adam Morgan's Mercedes Benz, whilst Ingram moved into seventh, behind the third BMW of local driver Tom Oliphant, and one position ahead of Plato.

Behind the podium trio of Turkington, Cammish and Jordan, Butcher and Tordoff remained in order to the chequered flag, ahead of Oliphant and Ingram.

Sutton was on the charge in the later stages of the race though, first moving past Morgan with a robust move at Cascades, and then Plato at Island on the penultimate lap. Unfortunately for Morgan, contact with Sutton as he passed caused rear end damage to his car and forced him into retirment, with Ollie Jackson's Ford Focus RS moving up to complete the top-ten.

The second BTCC race of the day is coming up at 14:50, ahead of the reverse grid finale at 17:10.
