Turkington takes 50th career BTCC win at Oulton Park

Sunday, June 30 2019

Colin Turkington claimed his 50th career win in the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship, as he headed home Andrew Jordan in a BMW one-two at Oulton Park this afternoon.

For the second race in succession, the Team BMW pole-sitter led the pack into Old Hall, with Jordan following him in second place this time after using the 330i M Sport's rear-wheel-drive to jump race one runner-up Dan Cammish off the line.

Cammish's Honda slotted into third ahead of local racer Tom Oliphant in the third works BMW, with Sam Tordoff just edging out Rory Butcher behind to lead the privat scrap between Cobra AmD's Honda Civic Type Rs.

Before the lead battle had a chance to develop further however, the safety car was deployed following a pair of on-track incidents. There was a coming together between the Vauxhall Astra of Rob Collard which sent Ashley Sutton's Subaru spinning out of the top-ten, whilst a collision between Jack Goff (VW CC) and Chris Smiley (Honda Civic Type R) sent both men into the barriers at Island and out of the race.

As the race resumed on lap six, Turkington led from Jordan, Cammish, Oliphant, Tordoff, and Butcher, with Tom Ingram's Toyota Corolla, Ollie Jackson's Ford Focus RS, Jason Plato's Vauxhall Astra, and Stephen Jelley's BMW 125i M Sport completing the top-ten.

Tom Chilton retired from the fringes of the top-ten shortly after the resumption with a slowing car, at around the same stage that Ingram squeezed past Butcher to move up into seventh.

The top five runners ran home to the chequered flag in order, in another impressive display from BMW's latest 3 Series.

In the second half of the race, the main chargers were Jelley, and Matt Neal who was scything from the back of the grid following his first race retirement. Jelley moved past Plato at Old Hall on lap 13, and followed Butcher past Ingram when the latter ran wide at Knickerbrook. Jelley then moved past Butcher at Old Hall on the penultimate lap to seal a in impressive sixth.

Neal moved himseld up to 11th, and ultimately secured himself a front row start for race three after the reverse grid draw which was conducted by MSV Chief Executive Jonathan Palmer.

It was a dramatic end to the race for Excelr8 Motorsport, both of whose MG6 machines were eliminatef from the race by accident damage. Sam Osborne went off at Old Hall, whilst Rob Smith hit trouble at Deer Leep.

This race result ensures that Turkington leads Jordan by 38 points in the championship ahead of race three which is coming up at 17:10.
