Oulton Park’s BTCC summer spectacular returns next weekend

Saturday, June 22 2019

The  Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) returns to Tarporley's picturesque Oulton Park circuit next weekend (29-30 June) for a thrilling triple-header, starring major names including ex-F1 driver Mark Blundell, series legend Jason Plato, and Nic Hamilton, brother of five-time F1 World Champion Lewis.

These star names are amongst a fantastic 30-strong field of saloon cars, featuring
many of the top drivers in domestic car racing, including reigning champion Colin Turkington, who leads the way in the new BMW 3 Series, and his team mate Andrew Jordan who has been the form man recently with five wins to his name.

For Blundell and Hamilton, this is a learning year with both drivers experiencing their first full season in national tin-top racing. Plato, on the other hand, is one of the most experienced drivers on the grid and should be one to watch at Oulton Park after claiming his first podium finish of the season in a Vauxhall Astra.

The championship is as good as ever, with major backing from five motor manufacturers, as BMW is joined by Vauxhall, Honda, Subaru and Toyota
, which has returned to the grid in an official capacity for the first time since 1995. The Toyota outfit is operated and run by the local Speedworks Motorsport outfit, with 2018 championship runner-up Tom Ingram behind the wheel.

Additional local interest will be provided by the presence on the grid of Tom Oliphant, who joined Turkington and Jordan in the official BMW line-up for this season. Oliphant, who grew up in the village of Tarporley, has been a long-time visitor to Oulton Park and heads to his home circuit amidst a second successful season in the BTCC in which he has already claimed a maiden podium finish.

For this season, Tom is joined on the bill by his brother Jack, a former international handball player who is racing in the Ginetta GT4 Supercup races.

Tom Oliphant said: "From our family home you can hear the sound of the cars on track and Oulton was a big part of our childhood. We both got into motorsport through Tarporley Karting Team and enjoyed it from the start.

"Signing with Team BMW was a dream come true and it's been an amazing experience so far. The BMW 330i M Sport is a fantastic car and I'm pleased with the pace I've shown this season, even if some bad luck means results haven't always gone my way."

The BTCC will thrill crowds on the Sunday with three headline races, whilst a full support race programme, trade and manufacturer zone, a fun fair and a free pit walk and autograph session will ensure there is plenty to entertain visitors throughout the day.

Race day tickets are £28 in advance with free entry for under 13s. Tickets can be purchased by calling 0843 453 9000 or by clicking here.
