Jelley wins in the BTCC after Hill penalty at Oulton Park

Sunday, June 30 2019

Stephen Jelley claimed his first Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship victory in a decade at Oulton Park this afternoon, after Jake Hill received a 20-second penalty following his on-the-road-win.

The altered result means that Stephen Jelley has claimed his first win in the BTCC since his return to the championship, and his third win in the series overall following a double win at Rockingham back in 2009.

Hill received the penalty for an incident with Matt Neal on the third lap of the race, when it seemed that Neal's Honda had passed Hill's Audi for the lead at Old Hall. The duo made contact, sending Neal spinning across the grass. The chasing pack dispersed across the Avenue in avoidance, with Jason Plato's Vauxhall and Tom Ingram's Toyota shooting across the grass, whilst the fortuitous Rory Butcher inherited second position.

Plato developed a fluid leak following his excursion causing a slippery surface at Island which caught out a number of drivers including Ingram and Neal's team-mate Dan Cammish. Remarkably, Neal was back on track by this point and beginning his charge back through the pack to an eventual 11th place finish.

After this point, Hill possessed a commanding lead from Butcher, with Stephen Jelley third in the grid's sole BMW 125i M Sport. Butcher set about reducing Hill's advantage and seemed poised to pounce just one lap from home, but he was the next car to run wide at Island, losing any chance of a win. From there Hill held on to take the chequered flag on the road, but was demoted to 14th place by his time penalty.

Jelley is joined on the amended podium by local driver Tom Oliphant in his Team BMW machine after a late pass on Sam Tordoff, who is now classified third. Andrew Jordan and Butcher complete the top-five. Championship leader Colin Turkington came home eighth after a race-long scrap with Josh Cook and Ash Sutton who finished sixth and seventh.

Turkington leads the championship from Jordan as the BTCC reaches its healf way point, with the next round of the championship coming up at Norfolk's Snetterton following a summer break on 3-4 August.
