Turkington surges to BTCC pole in close Oulton Park qualifying

Saturday, June 29 2019

Colin Turkington claimed Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship pole position for Team BMW after a tense qualifying session on the Oulton Park Island circuit, in which he edged out Cobra Sport AmD's Sam Tordoff by just 0.027s.

Turkington moved to the top of the standings during a series of early exchanges as he, fellow BMW 330i M Sport driver Andrew Jordan, and Honda's Dan Cammish traded chart-topping times. Each took a turn at the top, before the reigning champion's effort of 1m25.825s secured pole position, despite carrying maximum success ballast for leading this year's title chase into the weekend.

Sam Tordoff gave three-time champion Turkington a fright in the second half of the session with a blistering effort behind the wheel of his Honda Civic Type R, but ultimately had to settle for second position.

Cammish ultimately ended up third, whilst Jordan will start fourth for tomorrow's first race as he pursues a sixth win of the season.

Fifth place went to Tordoff's team-mate Butcher, who is aiming to get his championship charge back on track after a relatively low scoring weekend last time out at Croft. The Scot has been one of of the BTCC's positive stories, emerging as a title contender in his second full season in the championship.

Local man Tom Oliphant completed a strong qualifying half hour for the official BMW team by setting the seventh fastest time, one position ahead of Vauxhall ace Jason Plato. Tom Ingram was ninth in the sole works Toyota Corolla ahead of Jake Hill who completed the top-ten in his Audi S3.

Drivers to look out for charging through the pack tomorrow include 2017 champion Ash Sutton, who could only set the 14th fastest time in his Subaru Levorg, whilst Tom Chilton, who won the most recent round of the championship, is another high profile name down the order one place behind.

Josh Cook is another driver out of position compared to where we'd expect down in 22nd, so there should be lots of fighting through the pack tomorrow.
