Autocar magazine joins Oulton Park’s Wales Rally GB display

Friday, July 26 2019

The World Rally Championship's (WRC) Wales Rally GB kicks off its 75th running at Cheshire's Oulton Park on Thursday 3 October, and to mark the occasion Autocar magazine will put its name to a special showcase of cars from the event's history.

The Autocar display will complement the opening stage of this year's rally, which will see the stars of the WRC including six-time champion Sebastien Ogier take on a bespoke course around the venue. This means that a huge range of cars will be represented at the event, from the Lanchester 15/18 which won back in 1932, right up to the latest high-tech machinery from Citroen, Ford, Hyundai, and Toyota.

Autocar's relationship with the rally dates back to the 1930s, when one of its directors suggested hosting an event in a similar style to the Monte Carlo Rally to the Royal Automobile Club - and the rest is history. The event has been a massive favourite with UK motor racing fans from the days of the Ford Escort, to the era of Colin McRae and Richard Burns, and now to the present day.

Oulton Park has a long relationship with the rally itself, having hosted stages throughout the '70s and '80s and most recently in 1993 before returning to the schedule this year. That heritage makes it the perfect venue at which to host the special display of cars in association with Autocar. The display will be exclusive to the stage at the Tarporley circuit and won't be available during any other part of the rally.

Hugh Chambers, CEO of Motorsport UK, organiser of Wales Rally GB said: "Autocar was very much a founding force in the creation of what today is one of the most revered fixtures on the FIA World Rally Championship calendar. Now we are delighted to be teaming up once again, this time up to celebrate the 75th edition of the remarkable event the magazine helped to inspire all those years ago."

Autocar's current editor, Mark Tisshaw, said: "While always looking ahead, today's editorial team is immensely proud of the incredible history Autocar has shining in its mirrors. So we are thrilled to be acclaiming the achievements of our journalist predecessors with this special display highlighting the 75th running of the first RAC Rally they helped to originate back in 1932.

"Right from the outset, the RAC Rally proved a massive success with both participants and spectators, and remains so today. Rallying, of course, has changed massively over the years however, unlike most other forms of premier league motor sport, it has always retained a close link to the cars the public can buy, and thus remains especially relevant to Autocarand its readership."

Oulton Park's Special Stage will incorporate sections of the circuit, its access roads, the interior rally stage, and a water splash in a specially designed course with a crowd-pleasing layout. The event will be a weeknight festival of motoring

Tickets for the Oulton Park event are available exclusively in advance for £25 with no tickets for sale on the gate. Under 16s go FREE. Click here for more details and to book.
