Legend Solberg to kick off Wales Rally GB farewell at Oulton Park

Wednesday, July 24 2019

Four-time WRC Wales Rally Champion Petter Solberg will make his farewell appearance in this year's Wales Rally GB, which kicks off at Oulton Park in Cheshire on Thursday 3 October. And the event promises to be a real family affair, with Solberg's 18-year-old son Oliver making his WRC debut in an identical car.

Fan favourite Solberg will end his professional career in the rally, with father and son racing duplicate Volkeswagen Polo GTI R5s. The charismatic Norwegian, who has competed in the event 15 times, will revive his winning partnership with co-driver Phil Mills. Between 2002 and 2005 the pair dominated the world championship's Welsh stages.

Petter said: "Wales Rally GB has always been a special one for me and the chance to bring my professional World Rally Championship career to a close there is fantastic.

"There are so many memories from this rally, it's an event which has really been one of the highlights of my career - winning my first-ever WRC round, then winning the championship a year later was so special. And so special for my co-driver Phil, who lives there.

"It is going to be an emotional rally, especially competing on a WRC round for the first time with my son Oliver. It's an incredible moment for the Solberg family as one chapter closes and another one opens."

Fans' first chance to see father and son in competition will be the opening special stage of the rally at Oulton Park on the evening of Thursday 3 October, when the circuit's own rally course will be incorporated in the stage layout. The event will be the curtain-raiser for round 12 of the 2019 FIA World Rally Championship, with 22 special stages totalling more than 200 miles of world class against-the-clock competition.

Hugh Chambers, CEO of Wales Rally GB organiser Motorsport UK, said: "This is absolutely wonderful news. As a four-time winner, Petter holds a very special place in Rally GB history and, being such a legend, is loved by rally fans all around the world. Oliver is clearly a chip off the old block and has already proved himself to be a star of the future. To have father and son competing against each other - and the best in the world - in Wales will be very, very special. We can't wait to see who comes out on top!"

The Oulton Park special stage features a full evening of entertainment, with appearances from World Rally legends, live music and DJs and an autograph session open to all spectators. Tickets are available in advance only, priced £25 with free admission for children aged 15 and under. For more details and to book,  click here.
