Bullock strikes gold at Oulton Park in Williams FW06

Monday, August 26 2019

Martin Bullock won the 2019 Oulton Park Historic Gold Cup after an aggregate victory across the Historic Sports Car Club's XL Aurora Trophy's two races behind the wheel of his Williams FW06.

The Australian claimed the Cheshire circuit's signature prize after two hard fought races, finishing third in the first before winning the second in his ex-Alan Jones Grand Prix machine. It was a first F1 race at the venue for Bullock, but not the car itself - it was previously raced at Oulton Park by Giacamo Agostini in the Aurora AFX F1 Championship in 1979.

Jamie Bradshaw was the first to lay claim to this year's main prize after guiding his March 73A to a 10-second victory from Mark Dwyer's March 742 in the first race with Bullock completing the podium.

Bradshaw and Dwyer's Gold Cup campaigns came to a synchonised end however as they collided at the start of the second leg, an incident which resulted in the appearance of the red flag.

Bullock led the race for the entirety of its resumption, but it was far from plain sailing with constant pressure from James Murray in his Chevron B25. Bullock held on to win by just 0.296s though to add the Williams name to the Gold Cup's roll of honour for the first time. Third place in the second race went to another machine from the local Chevron marque - that of Clive Wood.
