Italian stallions shine in the Brands Hatch summer sun

Sunday, August 19 2018

Brands Hatch reverberated with the sounds of Italian thoroughbred machinery as Festival Italia returned to the Kent circuit for a third successive year today (Sunday).

On-track action was headlined by the Pirelli Ferrari Formula Classic series, with a stunning grid of prancing horses galloping around the 1.2-mile Indy circuit in two races. The first of these was the weekend's centrepiece race, preceded by a bustling public grid walk and rendition of the Italian national anthem.

Nigel Jenkins was the winner in his Ferrari F355 Challenge, and he was able to celebrate his success amongst the fans in Piazza Vittoria, where he was joined on the podium by Tim Mogridge and Gary Culver.

Another major highlight of the day was a bumper F1 car demonstration, featuring machinery from Dallara, Benetton, Arrows, Jordan, and other powerful single-seaters. This transformed the venue's natural amphitheatre into a throwback to Grand Prix racing with a showcase of the sport's classic sound.

Other on-track highlights included the Ferrari Club Racing Series, and Italiano vs Inglese races. There were also two outings for the BRSCC Alfa Romeo Championship, the first of which featured an impromptu flypast from the Red Arrows - the RAF's famous flying troupe were returning to Biggin Hill from a cancelled show in Eastbourne.

As ever, Festival Italia was much more than just a mere race meeting, with countless display cars, plus other family attractions allowing fans to make a fun day out of it. The venue's iconic corners were even given Italian names as a one-off to add to the Italian vibe.

Brands Hatch's festival season continues for two more weekends, with the Brands Hatch Mini Festival next weekend (25-26 August) ahead of the returning Festival of Porsche on Sunday 2 September.
