BTCC's Mat Jackson: "Wins are on the cards"

Thursday, September 21 2017

Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship race-winner Mat Jackson has his sights set on a season-closing victory at Brands Hatch on 30 September/1 October.

The Team Shredded Wheat Racing with Duo star was a title contender last year, but this time round is fighting just to remain in the championship top ten.

"Frustrating is the only word that describes it," is Mat's summary of 2017. "We've been hit hard on the engine regulations thus year, and it just makes everything so much harder. We spent the first four rounds at a disadvantage, although we're slowly getting back in there."

Mat refers to a turbo boost adjustment made before Oulton Park, where an anomaly was discovered in the Ford's Mountune-built engine's power delivery, meaning that the team had been unfairly penalised in the regulations. Since then he took a win at Croft, and has moved up the championship table over the second half of the season.

"We've got the pace, we had this since Croft, and we can challenge, but unfortunately luck hasn't gone our way," Mat continued. "Being taken out of three races at the last round at Silverstone is just not acceptable. We had the pace to come through and to be fired off is frustrating.

"So I'm looking forward to Brands, we've got the pace in the car, we just hope that we can remain on the track in order to pick up those results. I think if we do we'll be challenging for podiums."

Not just podiums, as Mat has won three of the last six BTCC races on the Grand Prix circuit. "Last year we came through and took a win," he said, referring to his victory in the last race of the season. "For sure we'll be hunting it down; there's a championship to play out, but for me it's wins on the cards, that's what we're aiming for."

Mat also offers his tip for the championship: "I think it would be great to see Colin do it, he's a great guy. Let's hope that the best man wins."
