Brett Smith heads Eurotech 1-2 in second BTCC practice

Saturday, September 30 2017

Brett Smith led team-mate Jack Goff in a Eurotech Racing 1-2 in the second Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship practice session at Brands Hatch today (Saturday).

The early moments in the second session, held in gloriously sunny conditions, were all about the Independent Drivers' title, with main contenders Tom Ingram and Jack Goff trading times, both a couple of tenths of a second under last year's pole position time. Goff's Eurotech team-mate Brett Smith was again on the early pace with third at that stage, whilst fellow newcomer Rory Butcher held fourth place for local team Motorbase.

The Subarus entered the fray midway through the 40-minute session, with Jason Plato moving up to third place and title contender Ashley Sutton holding eighth overall. As for Colin Turkington, he was just outside the top ten, with Gordon Shedden 15th, one place behind Honda team-mate Matt Neal. Then, with under 15 minutes to go, Sutton moved up to third place ahead of Plato.

Late improvements included Rob Austin, who joined the top ten runners, and Shedden, who took third place with just over six minutes of the session remaining. At this point, the pit lane began to fill with cars as drivers elected to try qualifying setups and first to improve was Smith, who replaced team-mate Goff at the top of the times.

No-one was able to topple the Eurotech Hondas, so Smith remained top, and will hope to emulate his father, Jeff Smith, who took pole position here at the start of the season. Shedden remained third, with session one header Adam Morgan fourth, title contender Ingram fifth, Sutton eighth and Turkington way back in 18th place.

The Qualifying session takes place at 3.05pm.
