'Shakey' defends MCE BSB title at Brands Hatch after Haslam crash

Sunday, October 15 2017

Local favourite Shane 'Shakey' Byrne has defended his MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship title for the first time, registering a record sixth victory at Brands Hatch after leader Leon Haslam crashed out with brake failure.

Just two points separated the riders going into the final race, and Haslam was ahead of Byrne after a solid start. But on lap six he was forced to jump from his bike at Hawthorns, breaking an ankle, after the brakes failed on his JG Speedfit Kawasaki.

From then on Byrne just had to focus on finishing the race in the points to seal his first back-to-back title. Meanwhile, Josh Brookes rode a robust race to take the race-winning 25 points and finish second in the championship, ahead of an unlucky Haslam in third.

Despite his injuries, Haslam joined Byrne for the celebrations on the grid before going to hospital for treatment.

Byrne, who won the first two races of the championship-deciding weekend, admitted it had been a tough season. "I never defended a title before and it meant the world to me," he said.
