BTCC's Tom Chilton: "I love Snetterton"

Saturday, July 22 2017

Returning Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship race-winner Tom Chilton can't wait to get the second half of the season underway at Snetterton next weekend (29/30 July).

Tom, who is combining a full BTCC season with returning manufacturer Vauxhall with a World Touring Car Championship programme, is encouraged by the Power Maxed team's performance in the first half of the year.

"I think we got off to an absolute flying start considering everything was brand new and we did very little testing," Tom said. "To get a podium in the first round at Brands Hatch, which is my favourite circuit, we were over the moon. We left there about sixth in the championship and it was like I never left!

"As the season's gone on we've had a lot of bad luck in qualifying. Because the team wasn't at the front of the grid last year, we start further back in the pit lane and that's caught us out with a couple of rain showers and crashes, and there's just nothing you can do about it."

Despite these frustrations, there have been several points finishes for Tom, who currently sits 14th in the standings and is looking to move up the leaderboard in the second half of the season.

"The first half of the year has gone as expected if I'm honest," Tom continued. "For this championship there's usually 22 cars within a second, so it's very close. I think we're better than I thought we'd be if I'm honest and the second half of the year should be very strong for us. I'm looking forward to it."

The summer break has also given Tom and Power Maxed Racing time to refine the Vauxhall at the recent Snetterton test. "It's always the halfway point at Snetterton and to do a two-day test before coming to race here is useful especially for a new car," he said. "Say on average this year we've qualified 12th, I'd expect after doing a two day test we'd be qualifying in the top ten because we can learn that much more. I'm excited about it all.

"I absolutely love Snetterton, it's a beautiful circuit. We've figured out some good things, we're sure we've got more to come and it's exciting."

Tickets for the BTCC at Snetterton are available from £27 with free entry for under-13s. For more information call 0843 453 9000 or click here.
