Hickman leads Irwin by just 0.040s in opening MCE BSB practice

Friday, August 18 2017

Local hero Peter Hickman kicked off the Cadwell Park weekend by setting the benchmark in the opening free practice session for the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship; topping the timesheets for Smiths Racing BMW by 0.040s from Glenn Irwin.

Defending champion Shane 'Shakey' Byrne had led the way towards the end of the session but Hickman was on a charge and he moved to the top of the times in the final ten minutes to put himself ahead of his rivals.

Byrne then dropped to third in the closing stages as his team-mate Irwin moved ahead when the Be Wiser Ducati rider took a small tumble at the bottom of the Mountain, but he was able to roll the bike back to the pitlane.

Leon Haslam on the lone JG Speedfit Kawasaki was fourth fastest, moving up ahead of Jake Dixon on the RAF Reserves Kawasaki and John Hopkins who launched into sixth place in the closing stages.

Christian Iddon was the leading Tyco BMW in seventh place, pushing local team Honda Racing back into eighth with Jason O'Halloran as James Ellison and Martin Jessopp completed the top ten.
