Stuart Oliver fends off Steve Thomas in Snetterton truck finale

Sunday, September 11 2016

Stuart Oliver won the final British Truck Racing Championship round at Snetterton today (Sunday), after an intense duel with Steve Thomas, whilst John Powell took another Division two victory.

Simon Reid led Steven Powell round the opening lap as Steve Thomas and Mat Summerfield were delayed in an incident from which both recovered, however the latter was limping back to the paddock. Stuart Oliver and Thomas were soon on the move, challenging Reid for the head of the field.

If a change of the lead was expected, it was not immediately forthcoming, for Thomas's attacks were distracting Oliver, and the ten-time champion was unable to get on terms with Reid's truck. But then Reid slowed, and there was a duel for the win between Oliver and Thomas.

In third place, race two winner David Jenkins could not make up ground on the leaders, as he was locked in a battle with fellow victors Shane Brereton and Ryan Smith. It all came to blows on lap five, when Jenkins was delayed by Brereton, and Smith was through to third, with Brereton falling back.

In the closing laps, Smith caught the leading pair and as they entered the infield complex for the final time, Oliver ran slightly wide at Hamilton, kicking up dust. Thomas got a better exit out of Williams, however Oliver kept on the inside, and did enough to take the flag ahead of Thomas and Smith.

In Division two, John Powell, who had been excluded from the previous race for a speeding infringement, managed to catch and pass Adam Bint, however the latter remains well ahead in the title battle.
