Hingeley tops ultra-competitive first British F3 Friday practice

Friday, October 28 2016

Fortec Motorsports' Ben Hingeley continued his form from Thursday, where he topped three of four practice sessions, to finish P1 in the opening half-hour of running on Friday at Snetterton ahead of this weekend's Duo BRDC British Formula 3 Autumn Trophy. In an extremely close session, Enaam Ahmed was second quickest with Kiwi Marcus Armstrong third, as less than two tenths of a second covered the top-five.

The early pacesetter was Double R Racing's Dan Ticktum who led the way in the opening stages from German Formula 4 Champion Joey Mawson and the aforementioned Marcus Armstrong. As times improved, Armstrong closed on Ticktum to move into second but the Brit found a response to hold on to top spot, just 0.024s ahead of the New Zealander.

Representative times began to be set however and it was soon Carlin's Enaam Ahmed, a race winner in this year's main BRDC British Formula 3 Championship, who moved to the head of the timing screens as he lapped the 300 circuit in a time of 1m43.698s. Armstrong meanwhile continued to impress and jumped ahead of Ticktum, but still 0.104s shy of Ahmed's time. That changed on his next circuit as he posted a 1m43.705s, closing to within 0.007s of the session leading pace.

With just over four minutes left on the clock though, it was yesterday's pacesetter Ben Hingeley who would claim the fastest time as he first improved to a 1m43.689s, putting him a miniscule 0.009s ahead of Ahmed. As the chequered flag came out, he found yet more speed and lapped Snetterton in 1m43.664s to hold a 0.034s advantage over Ahmed at the end of first practice. Armstrong took third with Joey Mawson fourth and Dan Ticktum fifth, just 0.192s shy of Hingeley's pace.

Jordan Cane impressed for Hillspeed with Cliff Dempsey Racing to claim sixth ahead of South African Callan O'Keeffe and Indian Tarun Reddy, with the Carlin Duo of James Pull and Cameron Das rounding out the top-10.

The second half-hour practice session of the day gets underway at 11:20 and you can follow all the action through live timing and updates on the official British F3 website.
