New look MG team aims to bounce back at Brands Hatch

Friday, March 25 2016

Former Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship Manufacturers' Champions MG is hoping that its new youth-focussed line-up will revitalise the team this season, which kicks off at Brands Hatch on 2/3 April.

Following a tough 2015 that yielded just a solitary win, MG has renewed its partnership with multiple champions Triple Eight. In return, Triple Eight will focus solely on the BTCC this year, having ditched its GT programme. It's also signed two young chargers to race the strikingly-liveried MG6, in place of Andrew Jordan and Jack Goff come last year's Jack Sears Trophy winner Josh Cook and reigning Renault UK Clio Cup Champion Ashley Sutton.

Cook showed impressive pace and fighting style in his debut season with Power Maxed Racing, and is delighted to have landed a works drive in his second season. "It's great to be representing a manufacturer," he said. "Especially one with such heritage as MG and it's great to be a part of a team like Triple Eight, which also has success in the history of British Touring Cars, so hopefully I can try and add to that."

Josh proved to be faster than team-mate Dave Newsham in the Chevrolet Cruze last season, but he still feels that he has much to prove. "I certainly don't feel I was leading the team last year; I was very much looked after by Dave - he's a real good lad and we got on really well. I had a good year last year, but I need to get my head down - Ash is a good pedaller and I need to make sure that we're both pushing towards the front."

The 2016 MGs didn't break cover until last Tuesday's BTCC Media Day and official test, so there's plenty of work to be done to get the cars up to speed with rivals. "There are still a few bits that need to go on the cars," Josh said, adding: "Straight out of the box we're comfortable and we're already going in the directions that we want to go in.

"I think you've got to expect the best and prepare yourself for the worst, so we're going in knowing that it's going to be ridiculously hard, but we're going to give it 110 per cent all the way."

Tickets for the opening rounds of the BTCC at Brands Hatch on 2/3 April are available in advance from £27, with free entry for under-13s. For more information call 0843 453 9000 or click here.
