A 32-car entry list has been unveiled for the 2016 Dunlop MSA
British Touring Car Championship season, which gets underway at
Brands Hatch on 2/3 April.
The list is headed by reigning champion team Honda, now
rebranded Halfords Yuasa Racing, where multiple champions Gordon
Shedden and Matt Neal will be joined by Andy Neate. A strong
challenge is expected from Motorbase, where Andrew Jordan will team
up with Mat Jackson in the Ford Focus. Rivals Team BMR has teamed
up with Subaru, and Jason Plato and Colin Turkington will be joined
in the new Levorg with James Cole and team boss Warren Scott. MG
and WSR (BMW) are also expected to challenge for race wins.
There are several rookies in the 2016 field, and heading these
will be actor and successful racer Kelvin Fletcher. The star of
Emmerdale has competed in Porsche and Super Touring racing, and
will join Hunter Abbott in a Power Maxed Racing Chevrolet
Other newcomers include Renault Clio Cup Champion Ashley Sutton
at MG, Matt Simpson in a Speedworks-run Honda Civic, and a trio of
Team HARD-run Toyota Avensis cars for Chris Smiley, Michael Epps
and local racer Jake Hill.
Also making his BTCC debut will be former Clio racer Mark Howard
for the new Team BKR outfit. With assistance from Team BMR, the new
squad will run the title-challenging VW CCs with race-winner Aron
Smith in their other entry.
BTCC Series Director, Alan Gow, said: "This truly is a golden
era for the BTCC. Our fantastic capacity line-up for 2016 looks set
to be even more competitive and enthralling than ever - I'm
genuinely excited to see how the season unfolds. The anticipation
amongst our enormous number of fans is also very plain to see… the
off-season has been full of intrigue.
"These really are the 'good old days' that, one day in the
future, we will look back on with great fondness and delight. But
today is all about the 'here and now' and we're all looking forward
to witnessing another classic year of the BTCC."
