Palmer sweeps to BRDC F4 pole at Silverstone

Saturday, May 30 2015

Will Palmer claimed a dominant pole position on the Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit today (Saturday) as he led the field by 0.975s. His HHC Motorsport team-mate made it a one-two for the outfit by taking second position with local boy Jordan Albert finishing third fastest. The top-five was rounded out by Ecurie Ecosse Young Driver Ciaran Haggerty and the Lanan Racing car of Rodrigo Fonseca.

As the 20-minute session began, all 20 drivers in the field heading out on to the 3.660-mile circuit to get a taste of the circuit in the dry, following Friday's rainy practice sessions. Ciaran Haggerty set the initial benchmark lap with a time of 2m08.768s, which put him ahead of Tom Jackson and Sebastian Lanzetti with a quarter of the session completed.

The Chris Dittmann Racing car of Tom Jackson then assumed pole position but was knocked off top spot immediately by Will Palmer, who showed his true speed and went to the head of the time-sheets with a lap that put him 1.887s clear of the rest of the field. Haggerty regained second and closed the gap slightly to Palmer before Harri Newey got in on the act and slotted in behind Palmer, 1.150s slower than his team-mate.

Jordan Albert, who lives in nearby Silverstone village, relegated both Newey and Haggerty down the field as he took up second spot. Will Palmer meanwhile was busy posting more purple sectors and he improved his best time to a 2m03.552s, extending his advantage to 1.501s. Team-mate Newey snatched back second with Haggerty moving into third, Rodrigo Fonseca fourth and Albert fifth at that stage.

Green sectors began to become rarer and every driver in the field began struggling to improve their times. Jordan Albert bucked the trend however to post a 2m04.636s and claim third spot behind Palmer and Newey. Championship leader Chris Mealin meanwhile was struggling to break into the top-ten in what was a very competitive session and ended in 15th position.

The drivers headed on to their last flying laps but as the chequered flag flew, nobody could improve and that left Palmer to claim pole position by just under one second. Harri Newey will line up on the front row with his HHC Motorsport team-mate with Jordan Albert third, Haggerty fourth and Fonseca fifth.

The top-10 was completed by Riki Christodoulou, Tom Jackson, Zubair Hoque, Omar Ismail and Sisa Ngebulana.

Race one begins at 14:20pm and you can follow all the action through live timings and updates on the official F4 website here.
