BTCC’s Austin targets race victories at Brands Hatch

Monday, March 30 2015

Dunlop MSA British Touring Car double race winner Rob Austin has set his sights on further victories this season, which kicks off at Brands Hatch this weekend (4/5 April), having completed several updates to his team's brace of rear-wheel-drive Audi A4s.

Rob's team has worked hard over the winter with a major overhaul of the A4, which is entering its fifth season of competition. "It's a very different car underneath," he said, joking: "I can't tell you any more or I'd have to shoot you!"

After a promising start last year, Rob eventually finished 12th in the standings, taking his second BTCC race win along the way. "It was tough," he admitted. "We were really destabilised by a sponsor not honouring an agreement, and therefore we weren't able to prepare as well as we'd like and that carries through the season. We're a bit disappointed with the overall results, we had some good ones, but overall in the big picture we felt we could have done better. This year, thanks to Exocet fuel additives and Duo we've got really good stability, so we've prepared really well."

That stability includes having Hunter Abbott back in the second A4, and both cars running a smart new livery. "Hunter's a really good guy," Rob said. "He's a friend of mine as well, so it's really good to have him in the team. Consistency and stability are our thing this year and I'm really hoping it's going to get us further up the grid.

At a recent Brands Hatch group test, Rob was encouraged by the pace of the 2015 A4, commenting: "I can't see anybody going quicker, so that's always good. No official timing, obviously, and we're just running old tyres from last year because the budget's still tight."

Rob will return to Brands Hatch this weekend, and he's confident of a strong performance in the opening round, following top five finishes in his previous two appearances on the Indy circuit. "I'm looking forward to it, it'll be full attack," he said. "I've had shots of race winning here before, we've had race-winning pace, so hopefully we can pull it off this year, who knows?"
