World Champions Read and Redman look forward to Cadwell return

Wednesday, July 22 2015

Cadwell Park International Classic star guests Phil Read and Jim Redman return to the Lincolnshire venue this weekend (25/26 July), where they will be taking part in track parades and interviews.

Seven-time World Champion Read won two of his titles in the 500cc class, ending a long period of domination for the Italian MV Agusta marque. His Cadwell Park debut took place 15 years earlier: "I think my first visit to Cadwell Park was in the late 50's with my future wife, Ann on my 1st 350 Manx Norton," he said. "I have many great memories, but the best was my last race on the MV Agusta when my thousands of fans gave me a wonderful send-off.

"It's very demanding and exciting to race there, especially with the fans so close to the track. The Mountain is very special."

RedmanRedman, who won six titles in the 1960s, moved from his adopted country Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) to Europe in order to make his mark. His favourite memory of Cadwell Park is from long after his retirement, however.

Redman said: "Whenever I think about Cadwell Park I remember my visit there with Team Obsolete and Rob Iannucci in 1998 when I paraded the Honda Six. I was foolish enough to crash on the first lap of the parade, but kicked the bike straight and jumped back on to finish my laps.

I was sent to walk to the first aid where I passed out and didn't remember anything except finishing the laps. I remember having to finish the parade as so many people had travelled long distances to come to see and hear the Honda Six. Rob remarked that the crowd loved me for getting back on and I replied: 'I'm not going to fall off every week just to please the crowd!'

"Cadwell Park is a great circuit because of the undulations of the track - it really makes for interesting racing."

Tickets for the Cadwell Park International Classic are available from £15, with free entry for children under 13. For more information call 0843 453 9000 or click here.
