Touring Car legend Priaulx returns to the BTCC

Thursday, January 08 2015

Triple World Touring Car Champion Andy Priaulx will make a sensational return to the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship in 2015 with the title-winning WSR team.

Priaulx will drive the WSR-built BMW 125i M-Sport in the 2015 championship, which kicks off at Brands Hatch on 4/5 April. The move marks a return to Touring Car racing for the Guernseyman, who last appeared at the Kent circuit in the DTM two years ago.

Priaulx's Touring Car career commenced in the BTCC in 2001, when he qualified on pole in a one-off appearance at Oulton Park driving an egg:sport Vauxhall Astra. He drove for Honda in the following season, taking a win on his way to fifth in the title standings before signing to BMW for an assault on the European Touring Car Championship. He finished third in his debut season, and won the title in 2004. The European series gained World Championship status in 2005 and Andy claimed the first three titles to cement his place as an all-time Touring Car great.

The announcement at the Autosport International Show confirms two of the three drivers that will defend WSR's BTCC Teams' title. Reigning Colin Turkington is still favourite to join Priaulx and Sam Tordoff, but his participation is subject to financial considerations.

"I'm delighted and really excited," Andy said. "I've been watching the championship, it's been improving and I love Touring Car racing. To get the opportunity to come back is absolutely amazing, we've got a fantastic team and car and it's perfect to come back in a car that's very familar.

"I really wanted to come back as I've missed it, I was very proactive in bringing this programme together. To come back is the key to me and to race against Jason Plato and the guys - I'm looking forward to it."

WSR Team Principal, Dick Bennetts added: "I've known Andy for many years and to have him on side is very good because he's a tough lad, I'm looking forward to it. The deal has been bubbling away for quite a long while and we only did it just before Christmas. Trying to get the car liveried over Christmas cost us a few beers."
