Star drivers set for Lamborghini’s 2016 British GT assault

Monday, December 21 2015

Lamborghini factory driver Fabio Babini and this year's GT3 class runner-up Alexander Sims will share driving duties with 2015 title contender Liam Griffin behind the wheel of a Barwell Motorsport Lamborghini Huracan GT3 in the 2016 British GT Championship. This follows the news that Jon Minshaw and Phil Keen will resume their successful partnership in Barwell's other car when the season begins at Brands Hatch on 17 April.

Two-time race-winner Griffin switches to the V10 Italian beast from one of Motorbase Performance's Aston Martin V12 Vantages as it makes its British GT debut, and he will contest the entirety of the season. Former FIA GT Champion Babini, who was one of the Huracan's key development drivers, will appear in the early part of the season, before Sims takes over during the second half of the year.

This is a major coup for both the championship and the team as it attracts one of the Italian marque's star drivers in Babini, whilst Sims is loaned to Barwell by BMW, for whom he remains a works driver.

Barwell will be supported throughout the year by Lamborghini Squadra Corse throughout the season, making this one of the most exciting entries on the 2016 grid.

The stunning Lamborghini Huracan GT3 can be seen in action at Brands Hatch (16/17 April), Oulton Park (Saturday 28 and Monday 30 May), and Snetterton (6-7 August) next year.

Griffin commented: "I thoroughly enjoyed last year and the decision to change teams was not an easy one, but the opportunity to drive a factory supported Lamborghini, run by the championship winning team, was just too appealing," he said.

"With Fabio's knowledge of the car followed by Alexander's knowledge of the circuits I have every hope that we will be in with a chance of winning the championship. Last year taught me a lot so hopefully I can use that to pick up the points that will make the difference come the end of the year."

Babini, who's CV also includes a class victory at Le Mans, said: "I'm so happy to race in British GT with Barwell Motorsport and Liam, and I have been always fascinated by the British tracks, overall for the fantastic atmosphere during the races and for the participation of the people!" he said. "I'm also very happy to enter into the 'family' of Barwell and I hope to give my contribution to a winning future! I'm excited to begin the challenge with them!"

Sims, who has established himself as one of the fastest men in the championship in recent years, added: "I'm extremely pleased to be able to continue my relationship with Barwell and to work with Liam in British GT," he said. "I have to thank BMW for allowing me to dovetail this alongside my programme with them. Working with Barwell over the last two years has been a real pleasure and so to be able to continue that is spot on.

"I am certain that Liam will be right on the pace and fully expect him to be at the front all season long. Although I will not be in contention for overall championship honours, it will still be great to do the four races and help Liam and the team fight for the championships."
