MCE BSB hits Oulton Park this Bank Holiday weekend

Tuesday, April 28 2015

The MCE British Superbike Championship roars in to Cheshire's Oulton Park circuit this Bank Holiday Weekend (2-4 May), starring some of the best motorcycle racers on the planet. Tens of thousands of spectators will descend on the legendary racetrack near Tarporley, with two headline races on the main event day (Monday).

The world's best national bike championship has lived up to its reputation so far this year, with breathtaking racing, plenty of thrills and spills, and a surprise three-time winner from the opening four races in James Ellison.

The Kendal-born rider has come back from a leg-breaking accident at Brands Hatch last July more determined than ever as he sets his sights on a maiden championship, and the JG Speedfit Kawasaki rider is ready to take advantage in front of his home crowd.

However, chief rival Shane Byrne has been racking up the points for PBM Kawasaki to hold a narrow six-point lead over Ellison in the standings, despite carrying an injury. The four-time champion badly broke his hand in pre-season testing but it hasn't prevented him from challenging for the podium at the start of the campaign.

Charismatic Australian Josh Brookes lies third in the points and is a dark horse for wins, after topping last Friday's official test at Oulton Park, where he ran under the lap-record pace on Milwaukee Yamaha's new YZF-R1.

There are many more riders ready to impress at Oulton Park in the 30-bike field, which represents nine countries and six manufacturers. The list features 12 race-winners and former MotoGP competitors, plus Ellesmere Port's Jenny Tinmouth, the championship's first female works rider. She has targeted points finishes with the factory Honda team at her home race.

Oulton Park is one of the most popular venues on the MCE BSB calendar, with challenging elevation changes and stunning scenery. It has staged some of the closest races in the championship's history, including the narrowest victory of the 2014 season where Brookes beat Byrne by just 0.01s!

The venue's superb viewing opportunities have been enhanced for 2015 with a new spectator bank, offering exciting new views of the bikes as they power up Clay Hill towards the high-speed Druids corner.

Ellison commented: "My confidence is always high coming into rounds, but it is nice to have the run of the win at Donington and two at Brands Hatch. This weekend is going to be tough as it is so close at Oulton Park, so I am going to do the best job we can. There is definitely a lot of pressure because of the results we had at Brands Hatch to try and win again, but I am not going to let that affect me. I've had some good success at Oulton Park, I enjoy racing here and its my local circuit."

The support package for MCE BSB is extremely strong, with a packed grid of bikes in the Motorpoint British Supersport Championship including a guest appearance from Isle of Man TT and TV star Guy Martin, who will ride a Smiths Racing Triumph.

The event will also include rounds of the Pirelli National 1000 and 600 Superstock Championships and young-guns racing in the HEL British Motostar series. Plus there's action from the Ducati TriOptions Cup, with added variety from the Hyundai Heavy Industries British Sidecar Championship's three-wheelers.
