Meet Le Mans legend Derek Bell MBE at Festival of Porsche

Wednesday, September 17 2014

Visitors to the Festival of Porsche on Sunday can meet Le Mans legend Derek Bell MBE at autograph sessions throughout the day.

Five-time Le Mans winner Derek Bell is attending the Brands Hatch Festival of Porsche as Porsche Club GB's guest of honour this Sunday, 21 September. Speaking ahead of the event Bell commented: "I am flattered to be part of the Festival of Porsche. If it hadn't been for Porsche, I wouldn't have had the sports car successes that I enjoyed. Porsche and I were just meant for each other and I'm very proud to be part of their sporting heritage."

In addition to his victories at Le Mans, Derek has also tasted success in the Brands Hatch 1000km with Porsche, firstly in the all-conquering 956 in '82, and then again in '85 in the updated 962C. "Of all the tracks in the country at the time I was racing, Brands Hatch, with its fantastic mix of corners and its undulations, was always the most challenging to drive on and the most satisfying to win at," he said.

Displays of the powerful Group C Porsches of the 1980s, with which Bell is so closely associated, will headline off-track festivities, with Derek leading on-track demonstrations of special Porsche cars in the Rothmans-liveried 956 Chassis No1. "The days of the Group C cars were definitely a golden era," he recalled. "They were beautiful looking cars, with great aerodynamic and geometric grip, and they were fast - we started out with 600 horsepower and ended up with 800!"

Other Group C cars participating include Porsche 956-007, in which Bell's co-driver Stefan Bellof set the fastest ever lap of the Nürburgring, and the Canon-liveried 956 which won the 1984 Brands Hatch 1000km with current circuit owner Jonathan Palmer behind the wheel.

Derek will be signing autographs in the Porsche Club GB Area at 11:00 and by the Special Porsche Display in the Grand Prix paddock at 12:30. He will then present awards to the winners in Porsche Club GB's National Concours competition at 16:00. Click here to see a detailed map of the venue.
