Oulton Park gears up for Mini's northern adventure

Monday, June 23 2014

Oulton Park's inaugural Mini Festival takes place next month (Saturday 12 July), expanding northwards following three successful seasons at Brands Hatch. From the original Austin Mini Cooper S to the modern BMW MINI, all incarnations of the iconic compact car are expected to appear, both on and off the circuit.

Mini owners will cap the Festival with a parade around the circuit, and owners are encouraged to join the large display by taking advantage of special discounted tickets. There is more information at oultonpark.mini-festival.co.uk/mini-owners.

Original-shape Minis will be represented on track in several classes, including the Dunlop Mini Miglia Championship, in which the modified machines are capable of accelerating from 0-60mph in less than five seconds and travelling at speeds of 120mph, much faster than a typical road-going Mini. Driver ability is paramount in the Mini Miglias, as well as the similar Mini Se7ens and Super Mighty Minis, as the cars are almost identical in performance. These will be some of the most colourful grids of the season as many of the drivers like to add their own distinctive livery to the cars.

The Power Maxed MINI Challenge has established itself in recent seasons as one of the most popular one-make series in the UK, with entertaining racing provided by race-tuned and turbocharged John Cooper Works machines. Further modern MINI action will be provided by the Scottish MINI Cooper Cup, as this series makes its annual pilgrimage south of the border.

Racing won't be the only form of entertainment, however, as Mini clubs flock from all corners of the country to fill the venue and create a unique festival atmosphere. There will also be an extensive trade village, allowing enthusiasts to purchase parts, spares and memorabilia. Other attractions will include live music and chances to win a Scalextric track with the Rainbow Trust charity. The paddock will also be open, allowing fans to get closer to the cars as they are prepared for the track and to meet the teams and drivers.

Russ Swift will entertain the crowd during breaks from the racing with displays of driving dexterity in his stunt show, in which he will test his MINI's limits with a series of daring manoeuvres.

11-17 year olds who fancy having a go in a MINI themselves can get behind the wheel with YoungDrive! taster sessions, in which all participants will be accompanied by a DSA-approved instructor. YoungDrive! taster sessions can be booked by clicking here
