Aron Smith: "I love going to Snetterton, it's a proper circuit"

Tuesday, July 22 2014

Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship race winner Aron Smith is full of confidence for the second half of the season, which kicks off at Snetterton next month (2/3 August).

The Irishman is happy with his move to Team BMR. Results haven't yet been consistent, but he currently sits in ninth place in the title standings, and is satisfied with his progress so far.

"I think realistically this was effectively a new team coming into the season," he said. "We had to expect that some weekends would go better than others, but in general I'm very happy with our performance. I genuinely feel that everyone at BMR couldn't be doing a better job, and everything has fallen into place for a great second half."

The highs included BMR's first win at Oulton Park, which gives Aron great pride: "Nobody will ever forget the first win for a team, so to actually do it is something that I will take to the grave with me. There's always a good Irish contingency that flocks to Oulton, it's probably the biggest percentage of home crowd that we get to perform in front of. It was brilliant as I have some really stiff competition within the team."

This competition includes BTCC legend Alain Menu, against whom Aron has compared well: "To be fair I think it probably surprised most at the start of the year that we were out-qualifying Alain, I've done that in all but one session, which has been brilliant. We're ultra-competitive; he's the first person that I want to know about after qualifying and free practice and he's the exact same. It's always nice when they show the data overlays and you're quickest, it's a little sweet victory every time!"

Since Croft, Aron has graduated from University and feels that he will be even more focussed at Snetterton, which is Buntingford-based BMR's home circuit. "I think we'll have quite a group of guests coming down," Aron remarked. "So to kick off the second half of the season at a track that's probably your most local is good. I go there full of optimism - last year I finished on the podium twice. We have a car that will certainly be in the ballpark, but there are probably ten other cars too, so we will still have to outrace and outperform them.

"I don't really have favourites, but Snetterton is one of the tracks that I do like because it actually is a really good test of the car and the driver. There's a mix of everything; it's a proper circuit with proper corners, it's brave, fast and technical, and it's a track that I love going to."

Tickets for the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Snetterton are available from £26, with free entry for children aged 12 and under. For more information call 0843 453 9000 or click here.
