Craven is F3 Cup champ as Sainz takes double win at Snetterton

Sunday, October 27 2013

Red Bull junior driver Carlos Sainz jnr matched his teammate Antonio Felix Da Costa's 2012 achievement by taking a Snetterton F3 Cup double last weekend at Snetterton, but it was Alex Craven who had the biggest reason to celebrate.

Craven's second place in class in race two wrapped up the 2013 F3 Cup Championship by 10 points to give Lanan Racing their second drivers' title this year, following Jake Hughes' BRDC Formula 4 title. The Cornwall-based racer has been supremely consistent all season, taking 14 podiums from 18 races.

Sainz Jnr ran away with the race two victory after closest rival Antonio Felix da Costa was eliminated in a heavy startline shunt. Henry Chart was around 40 seconds behind at the chequered flag, taking victory in the Cup class, with Alex Craven was third on the road and Alice Powell next up. Powell needed a win to have any chance of taking the 2013 title, but Craven's podium was enough to secure this year's championship by 11 points. Powell finished second in the points standings with Tristan Cliffe third.

In Saturday's race, Sainz Jnr won from da Costa by just over a second, with both Red Bull-backed drivers qualifying for the prestigious end-of-season Macau F3 race. Cliffe took the Cup class win.

New champion Alex Craven said afterwards: "A huge thank you to the team for everything this year. From the bottom of my heart I couldn't be more grateful! And a huge thank you to everyone else for the kind words, I'm still a little lost for words - nothing a few drinks won't fix!"
