Palmer takes maiden single seater pole in frantic F4 qualifying

Saturday, November 23 2013

HHC Motorsport's Will Palmer will start on pole position for the opening BRDC F4 Winter Championship race of the weekend at Brands Hatch. Matty Graham claimed second on the grid for Douglas Motorsport, with Pietro Fittipaldi third for Mark Godwin Racing.

Jake Cook was fourth quickest for Hillspeed with Sennan Fielding fifth for HHC ahead of Falco Wauer in sixth for Enigma Motorsport. Kieran Vernon was seventh on his F4 debut for Hillspeed, with Gosia Rdest, Matteo Ferrer and Fredrik Johansen completing the top 10.

A frantic session saw times change rapidly, but Palmer was a front runner throughout, eventually claiming pole by 0.069s from championship leader Matty Graham. Fittipaldi in third was just 0.135s behind Palmer, with the top nine runners covered by just 0.65s.

Ferrer, Fielding, Wauer and Graham also took turns at the top of the leaderboard during the session, before Palmer eventually claimed the top spot.

The session started in damp and cold conditions, but all drivers ran on slick tyres throughout. Times at the start of qualifying were in the 55 second bracket, with times improving by 10 seconds as track conditions improved.

The session was brought to an early close when Matteo Ferrer and Gosia Rdest were both left stranded in the gravel at Paddock Hill bend in separate incidents.

Speaking afterwards, Palmer enthused: "It's amazing! At Snetterton we were really quick, more so in the races, but the results didn't quite reflect the pace we had. We were really on it in testing yesterday and have converted that into qualifying today with pole position.

"It was quite tricky at the start with damp patches in some areas of the circuit but it got better and better as the session went on and my times were falling the whole way through. It was a case of keeping your head down and pushing each lap.

"A win is definitely the target now, and that would be pretty special!"
