Turkington: “Oulton is as close as I get to a home circuit!”

Tuesday, May 28 2013

Former Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Champion Colin Turkington has high hopes for the next round of the series at Oulton Park on 8/9 June. The Irishman has already recorded a win on his comeback to the championship, despite having started the year with a brand new car.

The 2009 champion debuted the new eBay Motors BMW 1-Series at Brands Hatch in March, and gathered valuable points in the races. Since then he has even taken a win at Donington Park, on only the car's sixth outing.

"We're definitely moving in the right direction," the 31-year-old said. "We have a good idea now of what we need to do with the car to make it quicker. It's a high level in the championship at the moment so give it a bit of time and I think we'll be at the front."

The Donington win came in the third race, but despite a reversed grid placing him near the front, he expects a repeat soon: "On pace for that race the car was very quick, so it wasn't a fluke that we won the race."

Colin joins an eBay Motors team with multiple race winner Rob Collard and Nick Foster, who is quickly gathering experience of the BTCC. The atmosphere has been harmonious and productive: "It's easier when you've got three guys, you've got three different views upon how the car is, so we're working together to try and move the whole project forward."

The car has undergone more developments in the five-week gap between Thruxton and Oulton Park, whilst Colin feels that they will be strong on the Cheshire circuit too. "I think it's much more favoured towards rear wheel drive than Thruxton or Donington," he predicted. "It's somewhere where the BMW has gone quite well in the past, and we'll be going there off the back of a few tests, so hopefully we'll learn a lot then. I think also for the drivers it's a bit more track time, it's going to help a bit more familiarisation with the car, so I think we'll be in pretty good shape by the time we get there.

"I like it, I've had really strong results there in the past, so yeah, it's as close as I get to a home circuit!"
