Onslow-Cole: “I’m very much looking forward to Oulton Park”

Thursday, May 30 2013

Tom Onslow-Cole heads to Oulton Park (8/9 June) on the back of a stunning performance in the previous round of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Thruxton. The Surrey-based racer hauled the brand new Team HARD. Passat onto the podium, despite the car only just being ready for the opening round at Brands Hatch.

However the 26-year-old was expecting a good result, just not so soon. "It's not a total surprise for me because everyone has been working really hard to try and get us to where we want to be," he said. We went to Thruxton hoping to get a podium and I think we all thought that if we were going to get one it would come in the third race with a nice reverse grid. To do it on outright pace definitely took us by surprise. But a nice surprise, plenty more of those this season wouldn't go amiss!"

Tom admits that the first few rounds have been hectic, to say the least. "It's literally been a case of finishing the car," he said. "At Brands Hatch we were so up against it to get the car out and we got through the weekend but it wasn't ideal by any stretch of the imagination. From thereon in it was about finishing the smaller intricacies of the car and getting everything working properly before we get into the outright setup of the car. We're working our way through a long list literally, but it's where we want it to be and we're now focussing on the performance side of things."

Thruxton's nature suits the Passat but Tom's still looking forward to his trip to Cheshire: "The high speed handling of the car is very good, but there's also something going on with the geometry and suspension in the slower and tighter corners and hopefully we'll have that ironed out.

"I think everyone likes to go to Oulton Park, it is very different as a circuit to have the undulations that you have there. It's very picturesque - not that we get to spend too much time to look at the scenery! It is a fast track as well and it has always provided good racing and it's one I'm very much looking forward to.

"I think if people want to make the little walk down to the last corner you'll see quite a lot of the action and on the inside of the track watching down into Cascades, you'll see quite a lot of overtaking at the hairpin and at the chicane as well."
