Morgan: “Oulton Park is a mega track”

Friday, May 31 2013

Blackburn's Adam Morgan heads to Oulton Park this month (8/9 June), having turned a torrid debut 2012 season in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship into a dream start this year.

The 24-year-old currently lies seventh in the championship, with only Honda and MG drivers ahead of him in the standings. Adam, who switched from Speedworks to Ciceley Racing over the winter, doesn't put this down to one particular reason. "I can't really put my finger on what the main difference is," he said. "I'm back with a family-run team and it's an environment that I'm really comfortable with. I did seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time last year and I think that was down to lack of experience and probably sometimes overdriving as well.

"It was a really character-building year, and coming from a season where in Ginettas where I was on the podium 90% of the time the whole year and to then record the most DNFs out of anyone in the season, it was difficult to put up with. I struggled at times and got upset, got frustrated which probably made things worse, but it's one of those things where you've got to take the bad with the good in motorsport and hopefully this year we'll turn that all around."

Despite the change of team Adam still races a Toyota Avensis, but little has been altered to the car. "Just the colour scheme," he quipped. "We made a few little changes compared to last year, but in general it's much of the same really."

Adam's approach to keeping things the same extends to preparations for his home race: "I'm just going in with the same attitude as the last three rounds, building on our setup through practice, hopefully put in a top ten in qualifying and then see what happens from there really, it would be nice just to keep in the top ten for all three races, but at the same time I will be pushing for some results. My confidence is growing every time I get out and if I can be there or thereabouts I'll be over the moon.

"It's a great track. It's a proper driver's circuit, all the undulations, all the off-camber corners, all the bumps on the braking area, you've got to be top of your game to drive this track, especially flat-out at 100% committed. It is a mega track."

Adam expects a great turnout too: "There'll be hundreds of family members, there'll be ones that I've not seen for years that my mum will have got in contact with and brought down, probably the postman and all sorts!"
