Mat Jackson: "Oulton Park is a fantastic place to go"

Wednesday, May 29 2013

Airwaves Racing's Mat Jackson is confident of resurrecting his Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship challenge at Oulton Park next weekend (8/9 June) after a troubled start to his and the team's season.

Despite enjoying a status as a regular title chaser, Jackson, who turns 32 the day after the next round, has only recorded a best finish of seventh place thus far. This leaves him languishing 11th in the standings, one place behind his less-experienced team mate Aron Smith.

"Obviously we haven't got off to the start that we would have hoped for," rued Mat, before offering a more optimistic outlook. "At Thruxton I think we made some good progress with the NGTC car, we've had a couple of test days between Thruxton and Oulton and we're hopeful that we've made some progress moving forward. When we arrive at Oulton we can challenge for podiums."

Testing has been an arduous process for the team, with no one single issue holding back progress. "It's a number of small things really," he commented. "We need to understand the car more. We had it all in place at the end of last year, but unfortunately we lost a key member of the team over the winter so it's put us on the back foot, we're still fighting to try and recover from that and get back on track."

Having Aron on board has helped, however: "The more cars that we can get within the team, we can drive the data forward faster and ultimately that drives the results home quicker. It's good that he's on the pace."

Mat heads to Oulton Park with a clear target in mind: "The Hondas are again the class of the field, they've got a chassis that is extremely well sorted. Oulton is a circuit that I like and we go there with the full intention of challenging for race wins. Obviously we're not going to know until we get there in terms of where we fare against everybody else, but you can rest assured that we're pushing for the top step of the podium.

"The whole circuit is a thoroughly enjoyable place, it's one of those places that still has the character of how it used to be I would imagine, although I wasn't around in those days! Oulton is tight, twisty, picturesque, it's a fantastic place to go and I think hopefully a good show for the spectators."
