Turkington: “It’s nice to have a new challenge at Snetterton”

Monday, July 29 2013

Former Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Champion Colin Turkington races on the Snetterton 300 circuit for the first time this weekend (3/4 August). He heads to the Norfolk circuit in the form of his life, having taken a near-perfect score at Croft before the summer break.

His rivals now consider him to be a threat for the title. "Well I'm certainly still in contention," he agreed. "Two strong weekends at Oulton Park and Croft have kept me there but at the same time I'm still 40 points away from Matt Neal, so that's a reasonable chunk of points. But I have as good a chance as the other guys in front of me, so I'd like to remain in contention as long as I can."

Colin is optimistic that there are similarities between the layouts of the airfield-based Croft and Snetterton circuits. "The car was particularly strong at Croft in the slow speed corners, so maybe the new layout here might suit us a bit more than perhaps the old layout, with the slow speed hairpins."

This weekend may be Colin's first chance to race on the Snetterton 300 circuit but he does at least have some prior knowledge, not just from July's tyre test: "We tested here in the wet at the beginning of the year, so I've been here before, but I haven't done too many miles, so I'm still finding my feet.

"It's great to have something new to get your teeth into, it's nice to have a new challenge and a different track to approach. I like it - it's a good mix of low, medium and high speed corners."

At the recent test Colin also confessed to have been on the lookout for overtaking opportunities but he isn't giving anything away. "I guess you're always keeping your eye out," he said. "We're trying to work on setup and making the car go quicker, but yeah, you're always keeping an eye out for things. I'd rather not share my thoughts!"

Tickets for the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Snetterton on 3/4 August are available from £26, with free entry for children aged 12 and under. For more information call 0843 453 9000 or click here.
