Jake Hughes surges into championship lead with race three win

Sunday, July 28 2013

Lanan Racing's Jake Hughes put yesterday's demons to rest by claiming victory in this afternoon's F4 race three on the Brands Hatch GP circuit.

Hughes dominated the race from pole position, leading every lap and winning from MGR's Diego Menchaca and Sean Walkinshaw Racing's Matty Graham. Hughes stretched a lead of 3.4 second after just two laps, and was able to ease off towards the end as he took the flag.

Hughes made a great start to lead into Paddock Hill Bend on the first lap, while fellow front row starter and championship rival Jake Dalton was forced to immediately defend from his fast starting Mark Godwin Racing team mate Diego Menchaca. Menchaca, who started third, made his move early on, passing Dalton at Surtees on lap two. Dalton then faded with an apparent problem, and was eighth by the end of the lap.

That promoted Matty Graham into a podium position, which he duly converted with third, his second rostrum of the day in easily his best weekend of the season so far.

Seb Morris was fourth for Hillspeed and spent the vast majority of the race fending off the attentions of James Fletcher in fifth, enjoying his best race of the weekend for Team KBS.

Jack Barlow took sixth for Sean Walkinshaw Racing, ahead of HHC's Gustavo Lima. Meanwhile Luke Williams put in an impressive drive to finish eighth, having started 15th for Chris Dittmann Racing. Privateer James Greenway achieved his long awaited top-10 finish with ninth while Raoul Hyman claimed 10th for HHC.

Hughes' victory saw him take the championship lead, and he holds a 16 point margin to Morris. Pre-race championship leader Dalton eventually finished 15th in the race and has dropped to third in the standings. Jack Barlow's impressive results this weekend moves him up to fourth with Charlie Robertson fifth and Matt Bell sixth. Matty Graham is the big mover, lying seventh having started the weekend in 10th.

Speaking afterwards, Hughes exclaimed: "This feels amazing. After yesterday and losing it on the last lap, this makes up for it! I'm happy with my weekend, I've secured a lot of points.

"The plan in the first few laps was to get my head down and get a gap. I don't know if something happened but the gap went up from one second to three and a half in one lap. But I was always going to take that and it made the race a bit more comfortable in the end.

"There are 90 points on offer each weekend so it's not going to be straightforward to keep the championship lead. Hopefully I can keep this now and we'll do our best to make sure that happens."

Hughes also secured the BRM Rapide Award for the fastest race lap in yesterday's race one, with a time of 1m26.785s. The same lap also secured him the pole position for this race.
