F1 racers sample DTM machinery ahead of new season

Thursday, January 24 2013

Formula 1 refugees Robert Kubica and Timo Glock have taken part in pre-season DTM testing this week at Spain's Ricardo Tormo circuit in Valencia. The drivers sampled Mercedes and BMW machinery respectively, with the manufacturers finalising their 2013 line-ups.

Grand Prix winner Kubica has been taking part in selected rallies since his serious pre-season accident two years ago. Despite ongoing mobility issues with his damaged arm, the Polish driver completed 114 laps. His test took place almost 20 years after Alessandro Nannini, whose own F1 career was cut short following an accident in which his hand was temporarily severed, competed in the series.

Afterwards Kubica commented: "My first day of testing in a DTM car was great fun and I learned a lot about the series and the DTM Mercedes AMG C-Coupé. The first installation lap was in the dry, then a few heavy showers of rain came down and we had to wait for the track to dry out. All in all, it was a good experience, getting to know the car in different weather conditions. I was able to get to grips with the DTM Mercedes AMG C-Coupé and felt very comfortable in the car, even though after my long break it meant adjusting to the high downforce that a state-of-the art DTM race car produces. I'm very pleased with my performance on this first day of DTM testing and had no problems whatsoever in the car."

Meanwhile Glock sampled a BMW M3 just days after confirming that he had left the Marussia team. With the remaining F1 seats likely to require financial support, the German, who was a test driver for BMW Sauber in 2007, is likely to be considering his future options.

Before taking part, Glock remarked: "I have fond memories of my time with BMW Motorsport and am very excited about testing the BMW M3 DTM," said Glock. "Furthermore, I am bound to see a few familiar faces in Valencia from my previous time with BMW. I am really looking forward to it."

Tickets for the DTM at Brands Hatch on 17-19 May are available from £29, with free entry for children aged 12 and under. For more information call 0843 453 9000 or click here.
