MSV Amateur Photography competiton: And the winner is...

Monday, December 23 2013

Once again we asked you for your favourite photos from the year and after narrowing down a superb selection, a shortlist was sent over to professional motorsport photographer James Bearne who has decided on his top five.

The lucky winner will be accredited to an MSVR club event of their choice in 2014. Here is the top five, with James' comments on each.

Fifth place: Chris Selby

Photo comp Am 2013 5

Event: MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship, Cadwell Park, 25 August
Camera: Nikon D7000
James says: "A classic bike shot, slow shutter speed with plenty of lean, super pin sharp on the rider and good use of kerb giving this a nice feel with lovely colour."

Fourth place: Steve Pinchbeck

Photo comp Am 2013 4

Event: Avon Tyres British GT Championship, Oulton Park, 1 April
Camera: Canon EOS 7D
James says:"Some times you need a little luck but this is a very dramatic image captured at just the right time!  Shot at his maximum aperture f4.5 so as to make sure the background was not in focus your eye goes straight to the driver and the flaming car."

Third place: Tom Banks

Photo comp Am 2013 3

Event: Cooper Tires British F3 International Series, Brands Hatch, 10 August
Camera: Canon EOS 7D
James says:"This shot demonstrates good skills and a good eye, having shot this on shutter priority Tom has made sure that he has chosen a nice slow shutter speed whilst panning car 87 L-R the next F3 car is coming from R-L giving an even greater feeling of speed.  Nice and sharp on car 87 with a nice clean background giving no distractions."

Second place: Simon Harrison

Photo comp Am 2013 2

Event: Neil Howard Memorial Rally, Oulton Park, 23 November
Camera: Panasonic DMC-G6
James says:"This is a great take on a classic shot, normally taken with the lodge taking the full background.  But in this case Simon has used the beautiful low autumn sunset to great effect highlighting the lovely autumn tree clolours and driver/co-driver."

Winner: Joshua Barrett

Photo comp Am 2013 1

Event: Avon Tyres British GT Championship, Brands Hatch, 10 August
Camera: Sony Cyber Shot DSC-H9
James says:"This is a well thought out shot taken on the Sony DSC-H9, using a slow shutter speed and panning nicely through the trees at a slight angle gives this a really nice feel.  It is a difficult shot executed perfectly."
