Action off track and in the air at this weekend’s Lotus Festival

Thursday, August 22 2013

In addition to racing and track demonstrations from F1 cars and more on the Grand Prix circuit at this weekend's Lotus Festival (24/25 August), there's plenty for spectators to see and do, not just off track but in the air too!

The circuit will be surrounded by car clubs and owners' cars from throughout the marque's history. In addition to sportscars from the Elite to Evora, there are special displays for the Lotus Cortina, 50 years old in 2013, the rare 340R track special and a unique Esprit timeline. Many of the cars will also take part in special track parades on Saturday and Sunday too.

Lotus also has a pedigree in rallying and in addition to demonstrations on the Brands Hatch rally stage, located behind Hailwoods Restaurant, spectators can book hot rides in the venue's rally-prepared Peugeot 206s on the day.

There will also be action in the air at around 1:40pm on Sunday, courtesy of British stunt pilot Sam Whatmough, who will be showing off his incredible acrobatic skills behind the controls of a Russian built competition winning Yak-55 aircraft. Whatmough, who regularly competes for Great Britain in international aerobatic competitions, will perform several death defying stunts, including a stunning vertical tumble through the air known as the "Lomchevak".

During the show the aircraft will be stressed to its limits, handling forces between +9 and -6 G. The Yak 55 has a symmetrical aerofoil which allows Whatmough to fly upside down. The stunt plane was also used by the Russian aerobatic team which triumphed in the 1984 World Aerobatic Championship.

With trade stands, live music on Saturday night, and a full programme of racing and Formula 1 demonstration runs, the Lotus Festival will provide a Bank Holiday weekend highlight. Click here to download a map of the event.
