Jake Hughes makes history as first BRDC F4 pole sitter

Saturday, April 27 2013

Lanan Racing's Jake Hughes has qualified on pole for this afternoon's (Saturday) inaugural BRDC Formula 4 Championship race, setting a lap time of 2m04.819s to fend off Jake Dalton and Matt Bell.

In claiming pole position, Hughes became the first recipient of the Jack Cavill Pole Position Cup, winning a cheque for £100 and a trophy.

Hughes, who has shown impressive pace at both the Snetterton test earlier this week, and during the pre-event test yesterday, was over four tenths of a second quicker than Mark Godwin Racing's Dalton with privateer Bell securing third on the grid. Hughes' lap time was the fastest of the weekend so far.

Mexican Diego Menchaca, driving for Mark Godwin Racing was fourth with Sean Walkinshaw Racing's Jack Barlow fifth. Hillspeed's Struan Moore rounded out the top six.

Pietro Fittipaldi claimed seventh for Mark Godwin Racing, ahead of 2011 Ginetta Junior Champion Seb Morris driving for Hillspeed. The top nine runners were covered by less than a second, with Charlie Robertson posting the ninth fastest time for HHC Motorsport. SWR's Matthew Graham completed the top ten.

HHC's Raoul Hyman was the first man on track to set a qualifying time, and times quickly began to tumble. Matt Bell, Matthew Graham, and Seb Morris all took turns at the top of the order before Hughes went fastest with eight minutes remaining. That time remained untroubled, but Hughes wasn't finished and with two minutes remaining in the session went four tenths of a second faster still to stretch his gap.

As the end of qualifying it was revealed that Pietro Fittipaldi had been excluded from the results due to a technical infringement. The Brazilian will now start from the back of the grid.

The first race for the BRDC Formula 4 Championship takes place at 14.40pm this afternoon (Saturday).
