Plato: "My style will be Maximum Attack!"

Friday, October 19 2012

Jason Plato is in no doubt as to who will take home the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship trophy this weekend at Brands Hatch (20/21 October). The double champion is known for his brash style and is not planning to change his approach as he aims to add a third crown to his CV.

The MG team leader heads to Kent just 15 points behind title leader Gordon Shedden, but having clawed back the deficit in recent races only needs to take pole position and five points off his rival in each of the three races. "Putting it like that it does sound easy!" he said. "However it will be tough to pull those points back, our competition is world class. That said, I am confident my MG6 GT will be quick at Brands, we have worked so hard to develop the chassis this year and the last few races have shown that we have a great chassis. One thing I can promise is that my style for the weekend will be Maximum Attack!"

Regardless of Plato's own strategy, he still has at least two Hondas to look out for, with the possibility of Andrew Jordan's Pirtek example being in the mix too. This doesn't faze the experienced fighter, who, in typically dismissive style simply said: "The plan is to get on pole positions and disappear into the distance; hopefully I won't see them!"

Even so, being fastest from the very first session won't necessarily help the 45-year-old in race three where the reverse grid means anything can happen. However with Silverstone, where retirement from race two prevented a clean sweep, fresh in his mind, it seems Plato really is the king of positive thinking. "In 2009 I won all 3 races in the day," he was quick to remind us. "I think this will be very much harder to achieve, however I have a great car under my bum and racing through the pack is my trademark."

For the veteran of almost every title fight since the middle of the last decade, there's little Plato hasn't seen. Nevertheless the record shows that so far he's not been able to overcome a points deficit in the final round. Perhaps mindful of this, the question is swiftly dispatched with a nod to his sponsors: "Put Tesco Momentum 99 in the tank, have a JP limited Edition Sandwich washed down with plenty of KX Energy Drink, and finishing off with a packet of Haribo Racing Mix of course!"

However the steely focus returns with Plato enjoying the final word, naturally: "I am very happy with the environment that everyone at 888 has created. We are going to Brands to enjoy and have fun. We have over achieved this year and we are proud of our achievements. Win, lose or draw, we can hold our heads high. But we all want to win, and at 17.15 on Sunday afternoon we will know who is the champion. Everyone at MG KX Momentum Racing hopes it will be me."
