Brands Hatch winner Sarah Storey nominated for Sports Personality

Tuesday, November 27 2012

Paralympic cyclist Sarah Storey has been nominated for the 2012 BBC Sports Personality of the Year in an Olympic and Paralympic-dominated shortlist.

Storey, who claimed four gold medals during the Paralympic Games in London in September, including two at Brands Hatch, also equalled the British Paralympic gold medal record of 11 set by Tanni Grey-Thompson.

"I'm so honoured to be nominated for Sports Personality of the Year" commented Storey on her official Twitter feed, who has been nominated alongside other British cyclists Bradley Wiggins and Sir Chris Hoy.

British Cycling President, Brian Cookson OBE said: "It's phenomenal news that three of our cyclists are up for the UK's most prized annual sporting award.

"Bradley Wiggins, Sir Chris Hoy and Sarah Storey - whose 11 Paralympic golds match Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson's record - all thoroughly deserve their place on the shortlist."

Storey was victorious at Brands Hatch in the Women's C5 Individual Time Trial on 5 September before destroying the field in the C4-5 Road Race the next day, winning by over seven minutes. Such was her domination that she caught and passed the main peloton of the Men's road race which started several minutes before her.

Storey joins a 12-strong shortlist that includes tennis player Andy Murray, athletes Jessica Ennis and Mo Farah, sailor Ben Ainslie and Paralympians Ellie Simmonds and David Weir. Rower Katherine Grainger, golfer Rory McIlroy and boxer Nicola Adams complete the list.

The award will be decided by a public phone in during the ceremony which takes place on 16 December at London's ExCeL and will be broadcast live on BBC One.

Elsewhere an internet campaign has been launched by Yahoo!/Eurosport for Alex Zanardi to win the BBC's Overseas Sports Personality of the Year award, presented on the same evening and awarded by a judging panel. Racing driver turned Paralympic cyclist Zanardi claimed two gold medals and a silver at Brands Hatch in September in a stirring performance for Italy. Fans are encouraged to use the hash tag #zanardi2win on Twitter to show their support.
