Laverty turns up the heat to topple Hill

Friday, May 25 2012

Samsung Honda's Michael Laverty proved that he is ready to get his MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship assault back on track by waiting until the final minute to top the second free practice session in the heat at Snetterton.

The session was red flagged after the riders had completed only a handful of laps as Alastair Seeley, who had topped the opening free practice, crashed out at Riches with the Tyco Suzuki heavily damaged. Seeley was unhurt in the crash but was forced to sit out the remainder of the afternoon as the team now work hard to rebuild the machine.

Laverty led the session when it resumed from Shane 'Shakey' Byrne and Tommy Hill with the pair swapping position beneath the Samsung Honda rider in preparation for tomorrow's qualifying session. Swan Yamaha's Hill then went fastest with just two minutes remaining, but on his final lap Laverty was able to gain the advantage to move back to the top spot. Hill held off Byrne with Ian Lowry's final run putting him fourth for Padgetts Honda.

Josh Brookes on the second Tyco Suzuki ended fifth after running third in the final ten minutes ahead of Graeme Gowland who maintained his position in the top five. Chris Walker on the Pr1mo Bournemouth Kawasaki was seventh ahead of Supersonic BMW's Patric Muff, who had been charging hard in fourth until a crash at Riches with 20 minutes remaining. Luca Scassa and Alex Lowes completed the top ten with Swan Yamaha's Noriyuki Haga in 20th.
