Brookes snatches pole by just 0.001 seconds at Snetterton

Saturday, May 26 2012

Josh Brookes stormed to his second pole position of the MCE British Superbike Championship by just 0.001 seconds from Michael Laverty in the closest qualifying session in recent history in the heat at Snetterton.

In Q1 Hill stormed to the top, heading the times as his rivals shuffled in the positions below. Ian Lowry held second at the chequered flag from Tommy Bridewell, after the pair swapped positions several times. Shane 'Shakey' Byrne was fourth with Josh Brookes in fifth whilst Alastair Seeley moved up the order in the closing stages to move into the safe zone for Q2.

There was a dramatic start to Q2 as Lowry crashed the Padgetts Honda at Montreal, he was unhurt but his aspirations of a front row start were shattered, whilst Buildbase BMW's Dan Linfoot also crashed out at Murrays ending his session prematurely.

In the final session Brookes snatched the advantage but then Michael Laverty had one last attempt to claim his first pole of the season. Laverty looked set to take the position as Brookes watched from the garage but it was denied by just 0.001 seconds with Hill and Graeme Gowland completing the front row.

Brookes said: "Most of the weekend we had been concentrating on race duration rather than just one flying lap as the tyres will come in to play in the races tomorrow. There were a couple of times when I nearly crashed but I knew I could go quicker than what I had done this morning. I was surprised with a 48.4 on the dash but I know the other guys always surprise me with their times. I am delighted with the pole position; I knew the lap was the best I could do so I was sat in the garage watching Michael's last lap. It was a relief but there was so little in it and it will be the same tomorrow."

Alex Lowes heads row two from Noriyuki Haga on the second Swan Yamaha and Byrne on the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki.
