Markus Pommer sets early pace at Silverstone F2 test

Wednesday, March 28 2012

Markus Pommer set the early pace during today's (Wednesday) opening FIA Formula Two test session at the Silverstone GP circuit, ahead of Christopher Zanella and Luciano Bacheta.

Drivers were greeted with warm, spring sunshine for the first of four sessions at the 5.901km track, where the opening rounds of the season get underway in just over two weeks time.

Bacheta laid down the early marker lapping in the 1:49s as he got to grips with the upgraded F2 car featuring new Yokohama tyres and carbon brakes. German Markus Pommer, 2011 runner-up Zanella and Alex Fontana were also looking quick at the midway point, joining Bacheta in the 1:49s followed shortly by Mihai Marinescu.

Despite a spin in the early part of the session, McLaren Autosport Award finalist Dino Zamparelli was lying sixth with fellow former Formula Renault BARC racer Hector Hurst seventh and Brit Daniel McKenzie eighth.

22-year-old Zanella then went top, moving in to the 1:48s - a full two seconds quicker than the best time set during the 2011 Silverstone pre-season test in the previous spec F2 car.

With seconds to go, Pommer put in a final quick lap to go top with a 1:48.844s - nudging out the Swiss driver by a mere +0.012s with Comma-backed Bacheta in third just +0.072s behind. Marinescu finished fourth with McKenzie fifth and Fontana sixth. Matheo Tuscher impressed with seventh ahead of Parthiva Sureshwaren, Zamparelli and Hurst.

The second of today's four sessions gets underway at 11:30 with full coverage on www.formulatwo.com.
