Scuderia Vittoria head Ferrari 1-2-3 in British GT Practice

Saturday, June 23 2012

The Scuderia Vittoria 458 Italia of John Dhillon and Aaron Scott headed a Ferrari 1-2-3 in first practice ahead of this weekend's Avon Tyres British GT Championship round at Brands Hatch today (Saturday). The Maranello manufacturer's representatives headed the Motorbase Porsches, who had led earlier on in the session.

The Porsche teams were instantly on the pace early in the session, with the number eleven Motorbase car of Danielle Perfetti and Michael Caine taking advance of local knowledge to head the table in the opening moments. The sister car was also in the top ten, along with all three Trackspeed 997s, at least until the number 32 car of Steve Tandy and Joe Osbourne left the road at Paddock Hill, putting a temporary halt to the session.

After track activities recommenced, the Steve Parish/Stephen Jelley car went quickest, giving Motorbase a 1-2, for the time being at least. Third was currently held by the Beechdean Aston Martin, with the two top Ferraris next up, until the Mtech car went quickest by a quarter of a second. Allan Simonsen tried to respond in the Rosso Verde 458 but traffic and yellow flags were proving to be a problem.

However given a clear track, Simonsen duly headed the field, just as the United Autosports Audi entered the gravel at Paddock Hill, their brand new R8 LMS Ultra missing its rear wing. With Aaron Scott placing the Scuderia Vittoria car second, then on the next lap first, Ferrari comprehensively replaced Porsche at the very top of the table.

After much activity, the final twenty minutes of the session ran at a relatively sedate pace, with more urgency placed on set-up for the remainder of the weekend, as there would be another practice session to perfect qualifying pace.

In the GT4 class, Lotus Sport UK dominated the rest by nearly three seconds from the Jota MX-5, with the Ginettas enduring a tough session until the Century Motorsport entry posted a final lap that was still over two seconds slower than the category leader.

The second practice session will take place at 13:35.
