Jack Harvey takes double pole in thrilling F3 qualifying session

Saturday, June 23 2012

Britain's Jack Harvey will start races one and three of the Cooper Tires British Formula Three International Series round at Brands Hatch this weeeknd from pole position. The Lincolnshire-based driver headed championship leader Jazeman Jaafar and Harry Tincknell in a fast-paced session.

Harvey was the initial pacesetter, with compatriot Tincknell trading times before championship leader Jaafar bested them by nearly four tenths. As Carlos Sainz Jr set off on his fast lap, the red flags came out after Fahmi Ilyas struck the barrier at Surtees and as his car was recovered the badly-damaged rear end left him well down the starting order.

Jaafar continued his pace, determined to take both pole positions on offer as the fastest times would set the grid for race three, with race one's starting order set from the second fastest lap times. As Hannes Van Asseldonk's session ended at Paddock Hill, yellow flags waved, giving the Malaysian some breathing space.

Also on the front row at this stage was Tincknell, however Sainz Jr was setting the sector times alight and exited Clark Curve six hundredths to the good. Jaafar responded, whilst Harvey was also flying and took provisional pole for both races.

As Harvey continued to pick up time, Tincknell and Alex Lynn also came alive. With Jaafar and Sainz still very much in the mix, the session headed into a thrilling conclusion. Jaafar closed the gap to Harvey and Tincknell also improved, however Spike Goddard spun into the gravel at Stirlings, bringing out yellow flags in sector three. As the seconds ticked away, no further improvements were forthcoming, meaning that Harvey took two pole positions in the session.

Tincknell's pace also brought him to the attention of the stewards for breaching track limits and having been summoned to race control, was docked his second fastest time, meaning he will be fifth for race one and third for race three, behind Jaafar but ahead of Alex Lynn and Carlos Sainz Jr.

Race One will take place at 15:00.
