Historic racers gear up for HSCC Superprix day one

Saturday, June 30 2012

A packed day of historic racing will kick off the annual HSCC Superprix at Brands Hatch today (Saturday), with over 380 cars taking to the Grand Prix circuit this weekend.

The highlight of the day will be the Derek Bell Trophy, which is open to Formula 1, F2 and F5000 machinery and recalls the famous Race of Champions events that were run in the 70s and 80s for these categories. Two cars once raced by British World Champions of that era join the field, and the ex-Jackie Stewart Tyrrell 006 and ex-James Hunt McLaren M26 are sure to be crowd favourites.

An entry of 31 cars will take to the track for qualifying at 12:30 and their first of two races this weekend at 17:10. Amongst them, former F1 driver and Le Mans winner Paulo Barilla provides a benchmark for the drivers.

The Martini Trophy will add a flavour of the Brands Hatch 1000km events of the past, with 2-litre sports cars from the 70s, whilst the Guards Trophy showcases the great GTs and sports racers of the previous decade and features the Lotus Elan and MGB in the field, both cars celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. Meanwhile the 70s Roadsports class includes the great roadsters and GTs of that era.

In addition there are races for the classic single seater feeder formulae. F2, F3 and FJunior cars will provide wheel-to-wheel action, with many cars sporting the names of their original occupants, many of whom went on to hit the headlines in F1 or sportscars.

Practice starts at 9:00, with the first qualifying sessions taking place at 10:05 and racing from 14:05.  A full timetable can be found by clicking here.

Tickets for the Historic Super Prix at Brands Hatch on 30 June - 1 July are available on the gate from £21 with free entry for children aged 12 and under. For more information call 0843 453 9000 or click here.
