Formula 1 cars return to Brands Hatch this weekend for Superprix

Monday, June 25 2012

Several classic Formula 1 cars have been confirmed for this weekend's HSCC Superprix at Brands Hatch (30 June - 1 July), ranging from the early 1970s to 90s. The cars will run on the full circuit, which hosted the British and European Grands Prix from 1964 to 1986.

Following the cancellation of the FIA Historic Formula 1 Championship race, many of the cars that would have taken part in the event will now race in the Derek Bell Trophy alongside powerful Formula 5000 and F2 machinery, recalling the Race of Champions events from the 70s. A huge grid for this race will include a Surtees TS9 from 1971, whilst the Tyrrell 006 that helped Jackie Stewart to his third and final World Championship in 1973 will be raced by historic racing stalwart John Delane.

Three cars from 1977 will also take part in the Derek Bell Trophy. An Ensign from the year when Grand Prix winners Clay Regazzoni and Jacky Ickx raced for the team is joined by a Hesketh, the team with which James Hunt built his reputation before heading to McLaren and the World Championship. The McLaren M26 that brought Hunt three wins during his title defence will also be present in the field.

A further three cars from a more modern era will be demonstrated on track between the races. The 1990 and 1992 Benettons that were campaigned by World Champions Nelson Piquet and Michael Schumacher will feature. Meanwhile, Piquet's 1988 Lotus 101T, carrying the coveted number 1, will provide a flavour of the turbo era before forced induction returns to the sport in 2014.

In addition to the F1 cars, the HSCC Superprix features a packed programme of racing from over 350 classic single seaters, sportscars, GTs and saloons spanning the post-war decades.

Tickets for the Historic Super Prix at Brands Hatch on 30 June - 1 July are available on the gate from £21 with free entry for children aged 12 and under. For more information call 0843 453 9000 or click here.
