Aston Martin set the GT practice pace ahead of qualifying

Saturday, June 23 2012

The Beechdean Aston Martin set the pace in second practice ahead of this weekend's Avon Tyres British GT Championship race at Brands Hatch today (Saturday). The team's best lap was almost half a second quicker than the Scuderia Vittoria Ferrari that headed the earlier session, with the Trackspeed Porsche of David Ashburn and Nicolas Armindo third.

The Aston Martin set the early pace from Scuderia Vittoria and the Motorbase Porsches, however the first quarter of an hour was fairly drama-free, with many drivers pitting to try new tyres. A problem for Steve Parish saw the Motorbase Porsche leave the road at Paddock Hill bend, which left the track almost clear of traffic.

Despite a slow first sector caused by the stricken Porsche, Matt Griffin still managed the lap the Mtech Ferrari fastest of all with new rubber. The time was soon bettered by the Trackspeed Porsche of Tim Harvey, with the sister car of Armindo taking third.

However the Beechdean team were soon back on top, with the Scuderia Vittoria Ferrari lapping just three tenths slower. However only the JMH Nissan and Ecurie Ecosse BMW joined the Aston Martin in the top ten at this stage, with little opposition offered to the dominance from Ferrari and Porsche teams.

With the previous session establishing a set-up on the cars, the fine-tuning carried out in practice two made for a straightforward hour, with less drama on the track. In the late stages the Danielle Perfetti/Michael Caine Motorbase Porsche was knocked out of the top ten as the RJN Nissan posted sixth fastest time and the Stark Racing Ginetta took tenth and as Godfrey Jones beached the Preci-Spark Mercedes in the gravel at Clark Curve, the chequered flag came out early.

In GT4, Lotus Sport maintained their domination, with a reduced but still comfortable margin of nearly a second from the WFR Ginetta. Qualifying will take place at 17:40.
