Hill victorious as Lowes celebrates maiden podium finish

Monday, August 27 2012

Swan Yamaha's Tommy Hill scored his sixth race win of the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship season in the opening race at Cadwell Park as Alex Lowes celebrated a maiden podium finish in second place for WFR Honda.

On the opening lap Hill got a flying start off the front row to lead pole-sitter Lowes into Coppice for the first time but Michael Laverty edged by the WFR Honda rider to move second on the Samsung Honda before taking the lead.

Laverty held his position at the front of the pack until the third lap when standings leader Hill took the inside line into Coppice to put the Swan Yamaha back at the front of the pack. Laverty was then pushed back to third when Lowes also saw the opportunity to make a move up the order at Mansfield to the delight of his home crowd.

Hill continued to try and edge ahead but Lowes remained in close contention with the WFR Honda rider's maiden podium finish leaving him now just a single point of the sidelined Noriyuki Haga in sixth place overall. Laverty's third place consolidated his position in the Showdown but the battle for fourth place was intense.

Jon Kirkham had held the position on the second Samsung Honda until the fifteenth lap when MSS Bathams Kawasaki's Danny Buchan made a decisive move Park after shadowing his rival for the majority of the race. Kirkham tried to fight back but was forced to settle for fifth ahead of Tyco Suzuki's Josh Brookes. The Australian had been ninth on the opening lap after qualifying twelfth and he gradually worked his way up the order to finish sixth after making a move on the last lap on Quattro Plant Kawasaki's Karl Harris. Supersonic BMW's Tommy Bridewell had an impressive performance from 17th on the grid to claim ninth with the Devizes rider making a move on the final lap to push Peter Hickman to tenth.

Michael Rutter was eleventh with Ian Lowry losing out on the top ten for Padgetts Honda after running wide at Park on the final lap to finish just ahead of Chris Walker. Mark Aitchison and the Splitlath Redmond Racing Aprilia team were unable to build on their qualifying performance when the Australian crashed out at Charlies on the third lap.
